Types of U.S. Passports

Regular Passport

Issued to U.S. citizens for personal, business, educational, and leisure travel worldwide.

Diplomatic Passport

Issued to U.S. diplomats and government officials representing the United States on official diplomatic assignments.

Official Passport

Provided to U.S. government employees traveling internationally for official government business.

Passport Card

A wallet-sized travel document valid for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and certain Caribbean countries. It is not valid for international air travel.

Does the United States Allow Dual Citizenship?

Yes. The United States recognizes dual citizenship, allowing individuals to maintain citizenship in both the U.S. and another country.

Naturalized U.S. citizens are generally not required to renounce their previous nationality. However, U.S. citizens must use their U.S. passport when entering or leaving the United States.

U.S. Passport Validity

• Adult passports are generally valid for 10 years.
• Passports issued to children under 16 years are valid for 5 years.
• Expired passports cannot be used for international travel.
• Many countries require at least six months of passport validity beyond your planned travel dates.

To avoid travel disruptions, it is recommended to begin your passport renewal well before your passport expires.

When Must You Apply in Person?

You must submit your application in person if:

• You are applying for your first U.S. passport.
• You are under 16 years of age.
• Your previous passport was issued before you turned 16.
• Your passport has been lost, stolen, or significantly damaged.
• Your passport was issued more than 15 years ago.
• Your legal name has changed and you cannot provide acceptable supporting documentation.

Passport Rules for Minor Applicants

Children Under 16

• Must appear in person.
• Both parents or legal guardians should generally be present.
• Proof of parent-child relationship is required.
• Parental consent is mandatory.

Applicants Aged 16–17

• Must appear in person.
• Parent or guardian identification may be requested.
• Evidence of parental awareness or written consent may be required.
