Types of U.S. Passports

Regular Passport

Issued to U.S. citizens for personal, business, and leisure travel by air, land, or sea worldwide.

Diplomatic Passport

Issued to U.S. diplomats and government officials representing the United States on official diplomatic assignments abroad.

Official Passport

Provided to U.S. government employees traveling overseas for official government duties. It is not valid for personal travel.

Passport Card

A wallet-sized travel document valid for land and sea travel only to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and certain Caribbean countries. It cannot be used for international air travel.

How to Apply for a New U.S. Passport

Applying for a new passport generally involves the following steps:

Step 1 – Complete Form DS-11

Fill out Form DS-11 online or download the form. Do not sign the application until instructed by the Passport Acceptance Agent.

Step 2 – Gather Proof of U.S. Citizenship

Provide one of the following:

• U.S. Birth Certificate
• Consular Report of Birth Abroad
• Certificate of Naturalization
• Certificate of Citizenship

Step 3 – Present Valid Identification

Submit a valid government-issued photo ID, such as:

• Driver’s License
• State ID
• Military ID
• Government Employee ID

Step 4 – Schedule an Appointment

Book an appointment at your nearest USPS Passport Acceptance Facility or another authorized passport acceptance center.

Step 5 – Submit Your Application

Attend your appointment with:

• Completed DS-11 Form
• Supporting documents
• Passport photograph
• Applicable Government fees

Your application will then be forwarded to the U.S. Department of State for processing.
